Joey Dee

Joey Dee, born Joseph DiNicola on January 14, 1940, is an American singer and songwriter best known for his contributions to the pop and rock genres during the early 1960s. He gained fame with his hit single "Peppermint Twist," which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1961. The song, a lively dance tune, became synonymous with the twist dance craze that swept the nation, further popularized by Chubby Checker's earlier hits. Joey Dee was also the frontman for Joey Dee and the Starliters, a band that played a significant role in the live music scene, particularly at the Peppermint Lounge in New York City, which became a hotspot for the twist dance. Their energetic performances helped to shape the sound and style of early rock and roll. In addition to "Peppermint Twist," Dee's notable works include "Shout! Shout! (Knock Yourself Out)" and "What Kind of Love Is This." While his mainstream success waned in the later 1960s, his impact on the dance music scene and the popularization of the twist remains significant, influencing countless artists and contributing to the era's vibrant music culture.
